The Effectiveness of Using Films in the Teaching of Listening to Improve the Students Leaning Achievement and to Enhance the Students Learning Motivation

This research aims to find out the difference in students learning achievement and learning motivation level. This is quasi-experimental research with the pre-test and post-test control group design. This research was conducted at the English Department, Faculty of Education, Champasack University. LAO. P.D.R. in the period of 2015/2016. The population of this study was all third year students consisting of 60 students, and the sample was 60 students established by using the cluster nonrandomized sampling technique. The variables of this study were the use of films in the teaching of listening (X) and students’ achievement in learning listening (Y1), and students’ learning motivation (Y2). The data were collected by means of tests and non-test. The data were analyzed by using MANOVA at the significance level of 95 % (p=0.05). The results of this study are as follows. (1) The achievement in learning listening of the experimental class is higher than that in the control class. The experimental class post-test mean score is 19.03 while the post-test mean score of the control class is 16.20, and the result of MANOVA with F = 4.961 with p = 0.030. (2) The motivation in learning listening of the experimental class is higher than that of the control class. The mean score of the experimental class is 47.83 while that of the control class is 45.36, and F = 5.909 with p = 0.018, which is lower than 0.05. This reveals that there is a significant difference in listening achievement and learning motivation level of the third year students of Champasack University, LAO. P.D. R who were taught by using films and those who were taught without films. It can be concluded that films are effective media in improving the students’ listening skill and they can enhance the students’ learning motivation
