Draft for a book about Jews in public life in Germany between 1918 and 1933, concentrating on Jewish voters and members of the government.Born in Berlin on December 30, 1890, Ernst Hamburger studied history, receiving his doctorate at the University of Berlin in 1918. After army service during World War I, he was an official in the Prussian Ministry of the Interior, and served as deputy from Breslau in the Prussian Landtag for the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD) from 1925 to 1933. In 1933 he emigrated to France, where he was a fellow of the Institut de droit comparé and the Institut de science de la presse in Paris. In 1940, he immigrated to the United States where he was on the faculty of the New School for Social Research and the faculty in exile of L'école libre des hautes études. From 1948 to 1955 he was executive secretary of the Human Rights Division of the United Nations. Hamburger was a member of the executive committee of the Leo Baeck Institute. He died in New York City on April 2, 1980.The planned book was conceptualized to be a continuation of Hamburger’s 1968 book about Jews in public life in Germany between 1848 and 1918, concentrating on members of the government; of parliament and the civil service.The project was supported by the Leo Baeck Institute and the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, both in New York: the book about the Weimar Republic was supposed to be published by the Mohr publishing house in Tuebingen.
