One life is not enough : Autobiographical vignettes [1890-1920] /

Memoir by Lillian Bader describing in great detail life in Vienna, including information on her grandparents and parents, her childhood in Vienna and Teplitz (now Teplice, Czechoslovakia), her education and studies, domestic life, World War I, politics and social issues, her mother's work as a piano teacher and as the director of a girls' boarding school, her husband's encounter with one incident of antisemitism in the Austrian army. The memoir ends with the first years of her marriage in the early 1920ies.The paper version contains a second, illustrated typescript.Lillian Bader, nee Stern, was born in 1893 in Vienna. Her father worked for an insurance company in Teplitz (now Teplice, Czechoslovakia). She saw him only during high holidays, until he died on pneumonia in 1909. In 1903, her mother took over a school which had been run by other members of the family for forty years, a girls school (partly a boarding school) in Vienna, the prestigious Stern’sche Maedchen-Lehr- und Erziehungsanstalt at Werdertorgasse 12-14 which was known throughout the monarchy. When the school was originally founded, it was the first school in Vienna to provide some sort of higher education for girls. Lillian Bader went to school there, and later to the Lyceeum to be able to be accepted at University of Vienna. She studied chemistry and received her doctoral diploma in 1919. A year earlier, she married the physician Erwin Bader, an officer in the Austrian army. After World WarI, she became head of her mother's boarding school. Her two daughters were born in 1921 and 1924.
