He studied art history at Freiburg University and his dissertation was published in 1914. Due to an injury from a horse-riding incident, he was exempt from service during World War I, instead studying medieval art with Adolph Goldschmidt. He taught art history at a number of German universites and published numerous writings. In 1931, he began splitting his academic years between New York University and the University of Hamburg. However, his position was terminated in Hamburg due to his Jewish faith during Nazi rule. He decided to remain in the United States with his wife, Dorothea Mosse, and taught at NYU and Princeton Univerity. Panofsky was a member of various art academies and was honored with numerous awards. He died in 1968.Updated recordDigital imag
