Julius Korngold Collection 1902-1920

The collection contains 19 handwritten and signed letters (13 letters, five notecards, and one postcard) from Julius Korngold in Vienna to Max Kalbeck, dating from the years 1902 to 1920. Included are personal notes and discussion of topics pertaining to their work as music critics, as well as letters pertaining to the compositions of Korngold's son Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Of particular interest is a lengthy letter containing sharp attacks against musical criticism in Vienna.Julius Korngold (1860-1945) was a noted music critic. He was regarded as the top critic in Vienna in the early twentieth century, when that city was viewed as the center of classical music. He was the father of composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold.Max Kalbeck (1850-1921) was a German writer, critic and translator.
