Peter Sichel Family Collection 1886-1939

This collection largely consists of official records from the legal practice of Marius/Max Löb in Mainz, Germany, as well as an obituary from the January 1912 edition of the "Liberales Judentum" monthly publication. There is also a modern typewritten transcription of memoirs, likely of Max Löb, including descriptions of historical Jewish life in Worms (the original document from which this is transcribed is not in the collection). Following this material is a fragment of the front page of "Der Stürmer" of February 1939, accusing the Sichel brothers of Mainz of treason and smuggling foreign currency, reverse of this fragment features a photograph of their elegant living room with the headling "Stolen from the people."digitizedMax (Marcus) Loeb was born 1860 in Abenheim (today a part of Worms) in Rhineland-Palatinate. He completed his studies in Heidelberg, Leipzig and Giessen, settling as a lawyer (Justizrat) in Mainz. He was active in promoting liberal Judaism in Germany. Dr. Loeb died in Mainz in 1911.
