After high school Ernst worked as a storekeeper, butcher and accountant. Ernst Steiner married Leonie Obersohn in 1931. She was born 1910 to the lawyer Wilhelm and Bertha (née Jellinek) Obersohn. Leonie worked as a secretary and later as a domestic servant. Ernst and Leonie’s daughter Eva was born 1932 in Vienna.
