Jenny Barth Bornstein Collection 1848-1897

The collection comprises several versions of Dr. Jenny Barth Bornstein’s memoirs, transcribed and translated by her great-granddaughter Olga Bornstein Wise and her husband, David Wise (ME 1600a and ME 1600b); a family tree, 1824-1960: ‘Stammbaum meines Vaters’ by Paula Fraenkel, née Barthand of Jenny’s son, Arthur Bornstein (ME 1602).Jenny Barth Bornstein (1859-1951) was born, raised and schooled in Berlin; she married in 1880 and was widowed in 1891; she raised three children, studied medicine in Switzerland at a time when German universities were closed to women, and was licensed as one of the first dozen female physicians in Germany in 1902. She practiced medicine in Berlin until 1912. In 1935, two years after the Nazis came to power, Jenny emigrated from Germany to Palestine and from there to the United States. She died in Herrin, Illinois at the age of 91.Processed for digitizatio
