Neumann Simon Collection 1936-1995

The collection contains handwritten letters from Neumann and Cäcilie Simon in Berlin to their daughter Elizabeth Lehr in New York. The letters date from July 1939, just after Elizabeth's immigration with her family to the United States, to October 1941. The letters contain questions regarding the family's emigration and life in the United States, particularly their financial situation; updates on family members in Germany; and discussion of efforts to immigrate to the United States. The original letter are accompanied by English translations. Also included are two 1949 letters from Ernst Krause to Elizabeth Lehr updating her on individuals they had known in Dramburg before the war, along with English translations. The collection also contains identity cards and passports for Elizabeth Lehr and her husband Ferdinand Lehr, as well as records documenting the deaths of her parents in Theresienstadt and Auschwitz.digitizedNeumann Simon was born September 27, 1870, in Dramburg, Pomerania, (today Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland); he died in Theresienstadt on February 12, 1943.
