Klein-Cohn Family Collection 1838-1990 Bulk dates: 1945-1949

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence from Fanni Blatny, née Klein in England to her niece Alice Jaffé, née Rice in Maryland. Also included are correspondence and immigration documents pertaining to the extended Klein family. There are explanatory notes by Alice Jaffé throughout the collection.Alice R. Jaffé’s maternal grandfather Rudolph Siegmund Kohn (later Cohn), born 1846, was brought from Bohemia to the US in 1865 by his eldest brother, the entrepreneur Edward Nathan Cohn. In the US, the brothers became active Protestants. Rudolph Cohn and his wife settled in Princess Anne, Maryland, where they had seven children, Mary Rice, the mother of Alice R. Jaffé, being the oldest.Rudolph Cohn’s sister Karoline Klein in Bohemia had ten children; one of them was Fanni Blatny (1873-1949), who was a prominent socialist politician in Czechoslovakia and then in Great Britain.digitize
