The Shanghai Jewish Chronicle was one of many German-language periodicals published for Jewish refugees who fled to Shanghai in an effort to escape National Socialism. Before World War I, the Jewish population in Shanghai was estimated to be 700; by 1945, the population increased to 25,000 as Jews sought refuge from persecution in Europe (this statistic includes Russian Jews who fled after the 1917 revolution). After failing to obtain visas to other countries, many Jews immigrated to Shanghai because they could enter its free port without visas. Most Jewish refugees left after the end of World War II.
