This small collection holds name lists of Jewish residents in Weimar, 1879-1941, as well as reports from survivors of the Holocaust in Weimar. Appel got in touch with institutions in Weimar, Germany, to find information about its Jews in the early 20th century and during the Nazi era. Dr. Eva Schmidt answered his quest with copies from the city archives and other sources.Michigan State University Professor John J. Appel was born in Weimar, Germany. His parents, Susanna née Ortweiler and Jacob Appel, as well as their other son Günther Appel were murdered in the Holocaust.Dr. Eva Schmidt (1897-1988) was a teacher at Weimar’s Sophienstift. In 1984 she published a book about Weimar’s Jews and their cemetery.digitize
