Moritz Schweizer Collection undated, 1939-1988

The collection contains documentation of the life of Moritz Schweizer, particularly his persecution during World War II. Included in the collection is a diary excerpt listing concentration camp victims he buried after his liberation; correspondence; documents pertaining to his emigration from Germany to Amsterdam; documents pertaining to his internment in Westerbork and Bergen-Belsen; information kept by Schweizer on children in the orphanage at Bergen-Belsen; and letters of sympathy to his wife after his death.Moritz Schweizer was born on August 13, 1900, in Euskirchen. After escaping to Amsterdam, Schweizer worked for the Joodsche Raad. He was deported to Westerbork, where he was in charge of the Orphanage Home in Westerbork before his deportation to Bergen-Belsen. Schweizer was liberated by Soviet troops in the village of Tröbitz while on a transport from Bergen-Belsen to another camp. After the liberation, Schweizer organized the burial of approximately 150 victims on April 27, 1945, in the village of Tröbitz. He kept a diary in which he listed the names of the victims.
