In September 2015, just before the third open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) Health Insurance Marketplace was about to open, we surveyed adult Texans ages 18 to 64 to examine changes in insurance status since the opening of the Marketplace. We then compared their responses to those of the United States population as a whole, as reported by the Urban Institute. We also looked at the changes for various demographic groups based on age, gender, race/ethnicity and income. The data show that Texans, like all Americans, experienced meaningful drops in the rates of the uninsured.
