The Darwin Correspondence Project was founded in 1974 by Professor Frederick Burkhardt, President Emeritus of the American Council of Learned Societies, with the collaboration of Dr. Sydney Smith, Reader in Zoology in the University of Cambridge and Fellow of St. Catharine\u27s College. The project\u27s editors are producing the first definitive edition of the letters to and from Charles Darwin, arguably the most important scientist of the nineteenth century. To date, thirteen volumes have been published, covering the years up to 1865.1 Volume fourteen (1866) is in press. The history and description of the Project are given by Burkhardt and Porter
