APPLICATION OF MEDAKA FISH Orizyas javanicus AS BIOINDICATOR OF Pb CONTENT IN WATERS

ABSTRACT\ud The research of the application of Oryziasjavanicus fish as bio-indicators of heavy metal pollution of lead (Pb) in the waters, was conducted in March-April 2015. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the medaka fish O.javanicus could be a biological indicator in pollutant waters, and to introduce O.javanicus for bioassay and bio-indicator. Sampling was done randomly by using gill nets at the mouth of the Jeneberang River in Makassar, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The study was conducted at Medaka Study Center, Research Center Building, University of Hasanuddin, Makassar. We treated medakafish with different concentration of Pb 0 mg/L (as control); 0.01 mg/L (Treatment 1); 0.03 mg/L (Treatment 2) and 0.05 mg/L (Treatment 3). Parameters used in this study included survivorship and fish abnormalities behavior. At the end of experiment, Pb content in medaka was determined by EDXRF. The results showed that the higher the lead Pb concentration in media, the more Pb being accumulated by fish. The amount of Pb detected in medaka fish were: 0 mg/L in control, 0.00085 mg/L in T1 (0.01 mg/L - below threshold); 0.00089 mg/L in T2 0.03 mg/L (threshold). Meanwhile, at a concentration of 0.05 mg/L (above the threshold) the lead content in medaka was 0.00095 mg/L. This study revealed that the ability of medaka fish O.javanicus to survive towards lead contaminated waters to above the threshold (0.05 mg/L) showed that this fish can be used as an indicator organism
