Gandhi and communication: respecting one’s feelings and those of the other

This paper examines Gandhi in an approach relying on interaction and interpersonal communication. If his communication could be divided into three axes, - press and media, symbolic collective actions and interpersonal communication -, this work focuses on the last one. In his interpersonal approach, Gandhi was searching the truth in each act and contact, trying to develop a “real” relation. We argue that he was searching for coherence between emotions and communication.The methodology developed is based on review of literature, visit to Gandhi Smriti and participation in to Re-thinking Gandhi: A Communication Perspective, by Centre for Culture, Media and Governance, Jamia Millia Universi-ty.In Gandhi’s communicational approach, we find a great sense of empathy. More broadly speaking, the interactional approach of co-constructing meaning seems to lie at the heart of his behaviour, enabling him, on the one hand, to succeed in convincing his interlocutors and, on the other, to impart a highly symbolic dimension to his collective actions.
