The fluorescence quenching of anthracene by dimethyl‐(DMM) and diphenylmercury (DPM) has been examined and compared in toluene and 95% ethanol as solvent. The rates of quenching by DMM and DPM are similar at room temperature. The application of the Arrhenius relationship shows that this is due to a fortuitous compensation of pre‐exponential and activation energy terms. It is shown that the fluorescence quenching by DPM results only from an increased rate of intersystem crossing induced by the heavy‐atom molecule. Copyright © 1975 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
