Under physiological conditions, the endothelium regulates vasomotor tone, the coagulation cascade, platelet aggregation, and vascular permeability. Endothelial cells have common properties, but these vascular cells also have organ-related characteristics, defining the endothelial heterogeneity. Endothelial dysfunction has been associated with many pathophysiological processes such as inflammation and oxidative stress. Impaired endothelial function leads to phenotypic changes and is involved in the pathophysiology of organ failure during critical conditions.
