The purpose of this study on one-hundred and eighteen beer drinkers was to evaluate the utility of the so-called biochemical markers in the detection of alcoholism. Measurements of mean corpuscular volume of erythrocytes, gammaglutamyl-transpeptidase, serum magnesium and blood urea were done on admission and one week after complete alcohol withdrawal. Macrocytosis was present in 91% of the cases, gammaglutamyl-transpeptidase was increased in 78% of the cases. Hypomagnesemia and lowered blood urea were respectively noticed in 54 and 35% of the cases. A different chronological evolution of those data should help the physician to appreciate the importance of alcohol abuse or to control the abstinence of their patients.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/...
