Today, antipsychotic drugs are widely used in the medical management of various psychiatric conditions. Although, the first generation neuroleptics have proved their efficacy in treating the positive psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia, their use has been associated with a variety of side effects including significant extrapyramidal symptoms. The newer antipsychotics offer many notable advantages compared with the older neuroleptics.
