Drawing on the literature in psychology and tourism, this study aims to explore the mechanism of how negative emotions shape tourist experiences. The study is expected to provide interesting theoretical contributions and practical implications through involving cognitive appraisals as antecedents of emotions, and incorporating coping strategies, and specific characteristics of emotions, like intensity, duration, dominance and sources of emotions as moderators, as well as the reevaluation of the benefits and costs of the tourist experiences as a mediator between negative emotions and tourist attitudes and behaviors. The study results will also help explain the contradicting findings in existing studies about negative emotions
