Tolkien über Musik

Diese Masterarbeit betrachtet die zahlreichen Musikerwähnungen in den litera-rischen Werken J.R.R Tolkiens. Mitenthalten ist ein Katalog aller musikalischer Referenzen in The Silmarillion, The Hobbit und The Lord of the Rings. Im Laufe der Arbeit untersucht der Autor die Musik Tolkiens anhand eigener Ideen und in Ver-bindung mit verwandten Sekundärqellen. Der erste Teil der Abhandlung ist primär der musikalischen Charakterisierung der zahlreichen Kulturen Tolkiens gewidmet. Der zweite Abschnitt behandelt die ästhetischen Konnotationen, die Tolkien seiner Musik verleiht, den Topos der Sehnsucht als künstlerische Inspiration, Signal-instrumente, Musik zur oralen Wissensvermittlung und die übernatürliche Kraft, die Musik in Tolkiens Welt sowohl psychisch als auch physisch besitzt.This master thesis focuses on the music in the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. It contains a detailed catalogue of every music-related reference in The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Furthermore the author examines the collected data based on own ideas and in conjunction with existing articles, writings and books of Tolkien-scholars. Throughout the thesis, a large attempt is made to characterise Tolkien’s cultures musically by investigating similarities and diversities found in the catalogue. The second half of this work deals with the aesthetic connotations Tolkien grants the music in his books, the topic of longing as an important inspiration for creating music, signaling instruments, music as a device for oral tradition of knowledge as well as the power music wields in his legendarium - both related to the minds of his characters and to the physical world
