To maximize the power output of wind energy plants, their size has been increased to rotor diameters over 120m and nacelle heights of 120m and more. Even with these dimensions, the plants encounter turbulence and vertical wind gradients from the ground boundary layer, which cause fatigue loads on the rotor blades. Minimizing these loads will help to scale up the blades and to enhance their durability. Morphing slats are proposed to minimize these loads. These slats are equipped with an actively controlled morphing trailing edge.
