Infection occurs following oral ingestion of eggs of the porcine tapeworm, Taenia solium.. Eggs migrate to distal tissue sites via the bloodstream, and develop into larval cysts. When cyst growth disrupts normal function of the CNS, patients most commonly present with new onset seizures or hydrocephalus. Neuroimaging with computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to diagnose neurocysticercosis.
