Programs Developed to Prevent and Treat Childhood Obesity

Many health problems, including cardiovascular risk factors, accompany the increasing numbers of children at or above the 95th percentile for body mass index. To fight this morbidity among youth, numerous programs have been developed with the aim of decreasing obesity rates in children by improving their nutrition and increasing their physical activity. Primary prevention should begin in childhood. These programs attempt to reduce the risk of obesity from different approaches through the focus on population and individual change. The programs reviewed also use varied approaches including written materials, changes in food service, multiple media messages, and activities to promote increased physical activity and decrease weight. An overview ofthese programs can assist health care professionals to implement parts ofthese programs or develop tailored approaches to use in their clinical practice
