The recording of the velocity of tricuspid valve regurgitation by continuous wave Doppler enables the calculation of the instantaneous systolic pressure gradient between the right ventricle and right atrium. As right atrial pressure is relatively constant, the rate of acceleration of the regurgitant jet reflects the quality of the rise in pressure in the right ventricle in early diastole, and therefore right ventricular contractility.
