Early in 1977, 25 of 1057 (2.36%) porker pig carcasses from one piggery were condemned for melioidosis. This was associated with contamination of the water supply with clay particles. No Pseudomonas pseudomallei was isolated. The number of condemnations for melioidosis rose from 0.2% and 0% in 1977-1978 and 1978-1979 to 0.96% in 1979-1980. P. pseudomallei was isolated from soil samples collected from close to the water supply
