Die Anpassung der Hintergrundbeleuchtung (engl. backlight) von Flüssigkristallanzeigen (LCD) an den dargestellten Bildinhalt (Dimming) ist ein Mittel zur deutlichen Reduzierung der Leistungsaufnahme von Displays, um beispielsweise die Akkulaufzeit von mobilen Geräten zu verlängern. Gleichzeitig kann damit auch der statische Kontrast (Schwarzwert) und somit die visuelle Qualität verbessert werden. Mit Local Dimming Verfahren (mehrere separat ansteuerbare LED--Einheiten) können dabei höhere Leistungseinsparungen und eine höhere visuelle Qualität als mit Global Dimming erzielt werden.
