Biodiversity may enhance and stabilise ecosystem functioning, but little evidence exists for diversity–function relationships involving multitrophic interactions in real landscapes. In multitrophic communities diversity may vary at different trophic levels, with either synergistic or antagonistic effects on ecosystem functioning.
