The importance of violence as public health issue has been highlighted by the WHO in the World Report on Violence and health, which identified violence as a leading cause of death in young people aged 10-29.Furthermore, beyond the extreme outcome of death, violence results in disability and reduced quality of life for many more children and adolescents. Exposure to violence also puts young people at risk of developing chronic conditions such as ischaemic heart disease and engaging in health risk behaviours such as alcohol and drug abuse.
