Construction of underground structures in urban areas requires a detailed assessment of the associated movements imposed on adjacent structures and services and in particular of any damage that may be caused. The most efficient way of investigating these issues is through the application of advanced numerical analysis, using for instance the finite element method. However, for a useful analysis to be performed, a high quality ground investigation must be conducted in order to derive the necessary soil parameters for numerical modelling.
