In histories of post-war Britain the ‘model-girl’ emerges as a particular ideological figure that achieved her status through wage earning and consumer spending, rather than, necessarily, through structures of economical or social privilege. According to contemporary media ‘new ‘ modes of feminine appearance and dress thus marked a ‘levelling-off’ of ‘painful class distinctions’ (Fleur 1962: 10). In this sense the ‘model-girl’ not only refers to the professional fashion model, it also refers to a wide-range of young women living and working in modern post-war culture.
