Data on nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate, silicate), biogenic-silica and chlorophyll a concentrations were collected along a south-to-north transect through the marginal ice zone of the Bellingshausen Sea during the Austral spring of 1992. There was a marked gradient in near-surface (≤ 100 m) concentrations from the most southerly occupied station (70°15′S, 85°07′W) to the northernmost (67°30′S, 85°00′W). Nitrate, phosphate and silicate concentrations decreased along the transect from 33 to 21, 2.2 to 1.2 and 76 to 35 mmol m−3 , respectively.
