Biologically-formed nanoparticles of the strongly magnetic mineral, magnetite, were first detected in the human brain over 20 years ago (Kirschvink, J.L., Kobayashi-Kirschvink, A. & Woodford, B.J., 1992, Magnetite Biomineralization in the Human Brain.
