ABSTRACT Nur Rochmah. 2016. “Conflict of Princess Kaguya in Isao Takahata’s anime Kaguya Hime No Monogatari”. A thesis of Japanese Department, Diponegoro University. Advisor: Yuliani Rahmah, S.Pd., M.Hum. The object of this study is an anime entitled Kaguya Hime No Monogatari. The method of data collection is library research. This study uses theory of characterization approach and psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is Sigmund Freud’s theory that discusses human personality structure. This thesis discusses internal conflict of Princess Kaguya in anime Kaguya Hime No Monogatari and the solving. The result of this study reveals the conflict factors such as Kaguya’s disagreement with her father, Kaguya’s father doctrine, and Kaguya’s disagreement with customary law. Moreover, there are three internal conflicts of Princess Kaguya consisting of marriage compulsion, Kaguysa’s soul, and Kaguya’s return to the moon. Princess Kaguya solved her conflicts with ego defense mechanism. The defense aimed to reduce anxiety caused by excessive superego.
