Juanita Kidd Stout was born on March 7, 1919 in Wewoka, Oklahoma. Both her parents were teachers, and they instilled in her a lifelong habit of study and hard work. She quickly advanced in school, starting college at a Lincoln University in Missouri at the age of 16. She transferred to the University of Iowa, and then returned to Oklahoma to be a music teacher. During World War II, she worked in Washington D.C., taking legal dictation at a law firm. She was so good at this she began to study law. When her husband Charles began work on his doctorate at Indiana University in Bloomington, she entered the Indiana University School of Law.
