Post-Communist Constitution-Making: Confessions of a Comparatist

How should post communist states craft new constitutions reflecting their separate histories and specific social, legal and institutional needs? Can constitutions be drafted for emerging states in Eastern and Southern Europe which will not only be comprehensive, but also flexible enough to accommodate future change in these societies? Can transferable legal institutions successfully be created by neighboring states in this region? Based on his experience as a member of an international group advising Czech and Slovak authorities on constitutional problems concerning the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, Professor Eric Stein will discuss these issues and potential solutions for constitutional change in Eastern Europe.
