Panel 4B: International Animal Law: The Animal Welfare Movements in Romania and China

Nancy Janes covers the plight of Romanian street dogs – particularly since the 2013 enactment of cull legislation—and her organization\u27s work to combat the problem from its source. Andrea Gung will discuss how her project targets animal welfare issues in China and Taiwan, with special focus on challenging the annual Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, China. Nancy Janes is the founder, President and CEO of Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. (RAR) and Animal Spay Neuter International (ASNI). RAR was founded after Janes returned from a 2001 hiking trip through Romania--what began as a recreational backpacking tour ended in an overwhelming desire to help the nation\u27s vast population of stray dogs and cats. RAR became a USA 501 (c) 3 in 2003. The main focuses of the group\u27s work in Romania include: providing free spay/neuter procedures, training local veterinarians to improve their surgical skills, providing veterinary care for homeless animals and those of impoverished citizens whose animals would otherwise suffer, and educating the public about the importance of spay/neuter and animal welfare in schools and at community events. Andrea Gung is the Founder and Executive Director of Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project (DDAWP). Gung and DDAWP champion animal welfare in China and Taiwan. Gung will be presenting on the dog and cat meat trade in China as well as the work of the on-the-ground grass roots campaign of Chinese activists. In particular, Gung will be addressing DDAWP\u27s work to stop the Dog Meat Festival in Yuling, China, and the new campaign to push for the passage of the Animal Welfare Protection Law in China.
