INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERT TO DELIVER 25th ANNIVERSARY RUSK CENTER LECTURE

Friday, September 27, 2002 WRITER: Kristine Fortunato, 706/542-5172 CONTACT: Gabriel Wilner, 706/542-5238, wilner@uga.edu INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERT TO DELIVER 25th ANNIVERSARY RUSK CENTER LECTURE ATHENS, Ga. - The Dean Rusk Lectures, a four-part lecture series commemorating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Dean Rusk Center - - International, Comparative and Graduate Legal Studies, continues on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, with its second lecture titled Constitutional Rights & Human Rights to be given by Louis Henkin, University Professor Emeritus at Columbia University. The lecture will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the law school\u27s Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom. Henkin is currently chair of the Center for the Study of Human Rights and director of Columbia University Law School\u27s new Human Rights Institute. At Columbia, he previously held chairs in constitutional law and in international law and diplomacy. In addition, he was the chief reporter of the Restatement of Foreign Relations Law of the United States, co-editor in chief of the American Journal of International Law and president of the American Society of International Law. Executive Director of the Dean Rusk Center and Kirbo Chair in International Law Gabriel Wilner says this 25th celebration is very much a celebration of Dean Rusk and the university\u27s good fortune of being associated with him. These lectures are on topics that were of great interest to the late Dean Rusk. By bringing these internationally renowned scholars to the University of Georgia, we are keeping with the educational tradition Rusk established when became a member of our faculty more than 30 years ago, he said. Professor Henkin is a brilliant scholar with great insight into the relationship between national and international law. This lecture is a must for all who are interested in the possibilities of the use of human rights law in our courts, Wilner said. The Rusk Center was established in 1977 and merged with International and Graduate Legal Studies in 1999 to bring research, teaching and service at the University of Georgia School of Law into the evolving international dimensions of law. A former Secretary of State, the late Dean Rusk was the inspiration behind the center\u27s creation. It was his profound belief that through education, international cooperation could be a conduit of maintaining peace, building democratic institutions and raising standards of living throughout the world. The remaining two lectures in the series are: The United Nations and Peacebuilding by Abiodun Williams, the director of strategic planning in the Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at 3:30 p.m. in the Larry Walker Room at Dean Rusk Hall. The United States and Europe: Political Cleavages and the Use of Law by Manuel Medina Ortega, a member of the European Parliament, on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at 3:30 p.m. in the Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom at the School of Law. The first presentation in the Dean Rusk Lecture Series Democracy Beyond Nation State: World Trade Organizations and European Union given by Eric Stein, the Hessel E. Yntema Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Michigan, was held Sept. 25, 2002.
