UGA SCHOOL OF LAW ADVANCES TO NATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION

Wednesday, March 12, 2003 WRITER: Heidi Murphy, 706/542-5172, hmurphy@uga.edu CONTACT: Kellie Casey, 706/542-2739, krcasey@uga.edu UGA SCHOOL OF LAW ADVANCES TO NATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION ATHENS, Ga. - Earlier this month, the University of Georgia School of Law won the right to compete in the American Bar Association National Moot Court Competition to be held in Chicago, Ill., in early April. The winning team was undefeated and beat George Washington University in the final round held Feb. 27-March 1 in Washington, D.C. The team was comprised of second-year students R. Stanley Baker, Erica L. Parsons and Meredith A. Bunn. In addition, this team placed fifth in the Best Brief category. Individual oralist honors were presented to Baker (fourth) and Bunn (eighth). A second UGA law team was narrowly defeated by Duke University in the final round. This team was comprised of second-year students Ryan G. Prescott, Jason C. Pedigo and Vincent A. Keesee. Keesee and Prescott placed fifth and tenth, respectively, in the Best Oralist category. Both teams were coached by School of Law alumna Holly A. Pierson and argued the fictitious case of U.S. v. Albert Earnest dealing with search and seizure law and ineffective counsel assistance. School of Law Director of Advocacy Kellie R. Casey said she was pleased for the two teams. For both to advance to the final round undefeated was terrific. The strength of both of our teams, and our advocacy program as a whole, is evidenced by the individuals honors they received at this regional competition. We look forward to having a team perform at the nationals of this prestigious tournament in Chicago later this year, she said. #
