Monday, April 5, 2004 WRITER/CONTACT: Page McCorkle, 706/542-0010, pageme@uga.edu UGA PROFESSORS AND DIRECTORS RECEIVE FULBRIGHT AWARDS Fulbright Programs Offer Grants for UGA Scholars To Teach and/or Study through International Exchanges ATHENS, Ga. – Carl Huberty of the University of Georgia’s College of Education, Edward Simpson of the Institute of Higher Education, and Maria Eugenia Gimenez of the School of Law have received grants from the Fulbright Scholars Program, according to the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) located in Washington, D.C. Huberty, a professor in the education college’s School of Professional Studies, and Simpson, Distinguished Public Service Fellow, received Fulbright Senior Specialists’ grants; Gimenez received a grant for three months of instruction and research. CIES granted Simpson two awards in education. He will work with the faculty of the National Institute for Higher Education in South Africa and also the University of Zagreb in Croatia. In South Africa he will contribute to the process of designing an academic operational model for the newly established National Institute for Higher Education in the Northern Cape. The institute is expected to develop partnerships with existing institutions, reach agreement with them and jointly offer programs for these partner institutions on its campus. Simpson will provide a model that will allow this to happen efficiently and cost effectively. Two weeks after his return, Simpson will travel to Croatia to the University of Zagreb (UZ) to prepare professional education seminars dealing with strategic planning, change and organizational culture. He will work to enhance institutional effectiveness and design a university institute of higher education capable of collecting data for the study and improvement of Croatian higher education and professional improvement of administrators and faculty. Huberty received a Senior Specialist’s grant in Education at Suez Canal University, Faculty of Education in Egypt, where he will conduct presentations on “reporting empirical results of studies in the behavioral and social sciences” and “the conduct of empirical research that involves multiple response variables.” Huberty will provide the Egyptian researchers with new information about reporting and conducting research. The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program offers two- to six-week grants to leading U.S. academics and professionals to support curricular and faculty development and institutional planning at academic institutions in 140 countries around the world. Gimenez received a grant under the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program in Law at the University of El Salvador in Argentina where she will work with other faculty on the development of justice reform and judicial training as part of the Americas’ economic integration process. She will conduct workshops and research on the development of continuing judicial administration training standards. Gimenez currently serves as an associate director at the law school\u27s Dean Rusk Center -- International, Comparative and Graduate Legal Studies. Since 1946 the U.S. Government-sponsored Fulbright Scholar Program has provided faculty and professionals with an unparalleled opportunity to study and conduct research in other nations. Opportunities include conducting needs assessments, surveys and institutional or programmatic research, taking part in specialized academic programs and conferences in conjunction with other scheduled activities, consulting with administrators and instructors of post-secondary institutions on faculty development, presenting lectures at graduate and undergraduate levels, participating in or lead seminars or workshops at overseas academic institutions, developing and/or assessing academic curricula or educational materials and/or conducting teacher-training programs at the tertiary level.
