Georgia Court of Appeals to hear cases at UGA School of Law

Friday, January 12, 2007 WRITER: Nikki Girard, 706/542-5172, lawprstu@uga.edu CONTACT: Marc Galvin, 706/542-0335, magalvin@uga.edu Georgia Court of Appeals to hear cases at UGA School of Law ATHENS, Ga. - The Court of Appeals of the State of Georgia will hear three cases at the University of Georgia School of Law on Wednesday, Jan. 17, in the Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom. Arguments in each case will last approximately 30 minutes and will be held at 9:45 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The hearings are open to the public, but due to limited seating in the courtroom, registration is required for attendance, with priority given to UGA law school students. To register, please contact the law school\u27s registrar at magalvin@uga.edu. In order for the presenting lawyers to make the most effective oral arguments, courtroom access will be limited to entrance during court recess. The Fourth Division of the Court of Appeals, comprised of Chief Judge Anne Elizabeth Barnes of Atlanta, Presiding Judge J.D. Smith of Gainesville and Judge M. Yvette Miller of Vinings, will hold this special session in Athens in recognition and celebration of the court\u27s centennial anniversary. Barnes and Smith are both Georgia Law alumni. In honor of the occasion, a 30-minute historical video of the Georgia Court of Appeals will be shown continuously in the law school\u27s Student Lounge from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The last time the court heard oral arguments at Georgia Law was April 2002. School of Law Dean Rebecca H. White emphasized the benefit the court\u27s visit will bring to law students. This is a unique educational opportunity for our students to observe the Court of Appeals first-hand and to be front and center for the courtroom proceedings. The court\u27s visit will allow our students insight into the legal system that will be very valuable our students as they begin their careers. The following cases will be heard. At 9:45 a.m., Stephen Nicholas Saunders, et al. v. Industrial Metals and Surplus, Inc., et al. At approximately 10:30 a.m., Marcelo A. Ferrari, et al. v. American Home Products Corp., et al. At approximately 11:30 a.m., Catherine Halligan v. Paul C. Broun Written briefs for each case are available on reserve at the reference desk at the Alexander Campbell King Law Library.
