Pedestrian detection and tracking constitutes a key element of many intelligent video systems in different application areas, in particular for video surveillance, driving assistance, advanced manufacturing automation, and video indexing and retrieval tasks. Each particular application domain poses significant and, sometimes, different challenges to this task (e.g., applications with static or dynamic cluttered backgrounds, recognition in poor lighting conditions, and occlusion management).
