The paper deals with basic and advanced theories for modeling contaminant transport in medium to fine-grained soils. Mechanical, hydraulic and electro-chemical phenomena of growing practical interest are considered with reference to mineral barriers for landfill liners and contaminant extraction from polluted sub-soils. In particular, prediction of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) performances and modeling of multiphase flows under high vacuum for speeding up polluted subsoil and groundwater remediation are proposed as illustrative example
