Graduation date: 1964This is a report describing the limitations of optical character\ud recognition using the mask-matching principle. Conclusions\ud are supported by the results of an experimental system built for\ud the purpose of reduction to practice.\ud Formulas are derived describing the limitations of a mask-matching system. Given desired character reading speed, a specified\ud character set, and reliability requirements; system specifications\ud such as disc size, RPM, mask size, light source intensity,\ud and output signal levels can be obtained.\ud Appropriate numbers are inserted representing the experimental\ud system for empirical verification.
