The optical properties of semiconductor nanowires are both important from a fundamental materials physics standpoint and necessary to understand in engineering applications: nanowire photovoltaic devices, sensors, and lasers, among others, could all benefit. Unfortunately, these optical properties are not easy to ascertain.
