The Roaring Metropolis offers a major reinterpretation of U.S. politics between the end of World War I and the onset of the Great Depression. Primarily through the archival study of social politics in three starkly different cities—Atlanta, Detroit, and Philadelphia—it recasts the decade as an era of aggressive governmental expansion, hardly the moment of retrenchment and reaction portrayed in most scholarship, and a time when government growth went far beyond Prohibition and the economic experiments that Ellis Hawley and others have described.
