The extracellular concentrations of the excitatory amino acid glutamate are controlled by a family of transporters that ensure appropriate signal-to-noise ratio as well as prevent glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Expression of the neuronal glutamate transporter EAAC1 is enriched in the hippocampus and cortex, where the transporter is localized to the somatodendritic body of postsynaptic excitatory cells, and the presynaptic terminals of inhibitory cells. EAAC1 appears to limit the spillover of glutamate at excitatory synapses and provide precursor for the synthesis of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in inhibitory cells.
