This dissertation is an historical case study of the evolving mission of Swarthmore College, a highly-selective, residential, liberal arts college located in eastern Pennsylvania. Research includes a review of the literature on mission and culture, books and articles previously written about the college, archival material from the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore, oral histories of people in leadership positions at the college that were conducted in the early 1980\u27s, and approximately two dozen new interviews by the author.
